  • CITES is an international agreement, between more than 181 countries and the European Union (Parties), aimed at protecting endangered species through the regulation of trade;

  • the Management Authority of each country is responsible for enforcing CITES;

  • the Customs plays an important role by administering CITES controls for all specimens entering or leaving a country;

  • protected species and the protection each is afforded are listed in the Appendices to the Convention;

  • the terms species, subspecies and geographically separate population, specimen, parts and derivatives are some of the more common terminology used terms when describing CITES-related goods; and

  • the legal basis for your authority to administer CITES is found in your national Customs and/or CITES legislation.
