Using the CITES Appendices

Let's try a last example, in this case a plant.

You have to decide on whether a shipment of finished products ready for retail sale containing Taxus wallichiana oil is protected by CITES. You should first look in the Appendices to CITES.

There you find that Taxus wallichiana is included in Appendix II with the symbol '#'. This symbol means that the listing of this species is done with specific conditions described in an annotation.

To find the annotations you have to scroll down to the bottom of the Appendices to find the annotations.

There you find the annotation #2 which explains that certain parts and derivatives of Taxus wallichiana are not covered by the Convention. Paragraph b) specifically refers to the exclusion of finished products packaged and ready for retail trade.

Now you know that the shipment does not need any CITES permit.
