To sum up, the CITES Appendices and the Checklist of CITES Species are used to help determine whether specimens are protected and what permit requirements apply. To do this:

• Find the species in the CITES Appendices Index.
• Turn to the page indicated to determine what Appendix the species falls under.
• If you can not find the species in the Appendices, look in the Checklist of CITES Species.
• Look on the How CITES Regulates Trade Chart to find out what permits are required.
• Determine if a CITES permit exemption applies.
