Final Application: Using Table II of the Checklist - Summary

This exercise highlights a number of key points which you should keep in mind:

  • The Checklist to assist in making non-detriment findings for Appendix II exports was been developed to help build the capacity of Scientific Authorities in advising whether exports of Appendix II-listed taxa are not-detrimental to the species' survival.
  • Many categories in the Checklist are qualitative. The reason for the use of qualitative data is that great difficulties have been met in developing hard criteria for sustainable use across large numbers of taxa and in diverse ecosystems. Furthermore, given wide range of species in international trade, it is very difficult to extrapolate quantitative data from those few species where harvesting has been studied.
  • Note that the relevance of some of the management questions will vary from region to region and from country to country.
  • Finally, the Checklist should be viewed as an early stage in an evolving process that will witness the increasing adoption of management schemes and of improvements in information collection.
