NDF=Risk Assessment Methodology

The same approaches and thinking that apply to making risk assessments apply to making non-detriment findings.

The Guidance For CITES Scientific Authorities: Checklist to assist in making non-detriment findings for Appendix II exports (available in the References section of the course) uses an approach known as a "rapid vulnerability assessment" (RVA). Such a RVA helps to determine whether a species may be at risk from overexploitation.

However, a RVA does not actually provide quantitative information to assist in determining harvest limits or export quotas, two mechanisms that have been used to maintain harvests and trade within sustainable levels by a number of CITES Parties.
